ne its very existence. One - less known but shameful - is the waste disposal emergency
                                                    that came to light in 2015 with an investigation into a complaint by the Financial
                                                    Times about a shocking situation in “Thilafushi, the garbage island of the maldives”
                                                    where without any criterion the waste coming from all over the nation are burned. It
                                                    seems that the government is equipping itself with urgent interventional measures,
                                                    on pain of the collapse of tourism which in fact represents one third of the national
                                                    GdP. And still among the risks of the very life of the maldives the notorious global
                                                    warming, which could in fact dramatically capitulate in the extinction of the emerged
                                                    lands with the melting of the glaciers and the raising of the sea level. In 1998, the mal-
                                                    dives were hit by the devastating effects of the Nino, a cyclical but very unpredictable
                                                    climatic phenomenon. Since then the maldivian coral reefs have not fully recovered
                                                    and indeed many are still completely bare. Fortunately the sea beds, which repre-
                                                    sent the submerged paradise of this earthly paradise, still manage to offer breathta-
                                                    king opportunities for snorlkeling. The time in the maldives is in fact largely spent
                                                    “underwater”, swimming with centennial tortoises, multicolored fish. Wrapped in
                                                    a surreal silence, of peace, of purity, of absolute beauty and then re-emerge each time
                                                    in the crystal clear waters, looking up to the sky and seeing birds of all species, enjoy
                                                    unforgettable sunsets and sunrises. A journey that is absolute refreshment for the
                                                    mind and the body, but it is also a tangible awareness of the fragile ecosystem. Because
                                                    the maldives are the caustic similarity of our days.
